SAILORS DO CRY ! -POETRY..

SAILORS DO CRY !

This is taken from the Captain VADAIKEL collection...He mentioned this as his friend's true story while onboard......

I remember the days , you threw your love on me strong

I was the typical sailor on shore leave— full of life

You were eager to walk with me,  on the wild side

You kept pouring love into my heart

Till I looked at you,  with eyes of love

It was love on a two way lane

Remember those seven day weekends

When we ate nothing but soul food

Then came the shipping recession, and my world crumbled

King Midas in reverse , I was in the middle of a heart ache

Slowly , but surely, you drifted away when I needed you the most

You had no use for knights in rusty armour

I tried dancing some more with you, on the jagged edge

Though I knew well , that it takes two to tango

I still remember the night you called it a day

Even while I desperately tried lighting candles in the rain

I cried all the way home—yes , sailors do cry!

You broke my heart in more places than I could ever find out

I had nobody to help me pick up the broken pieces

There was no sunshine for long after you left

It was permanent rainy season for my heart

My lips smiled , my eyes never did

I lived in a daze , in a black and white world

Sometimes I wondered, where all the flowers had gone

Yes baby, I loved you so much , it hurt ed

My friend hastened to tell me “ you need a vacation from love!’

Then my bewitching new love waltzed into my life

She knew all, but let me be her third world country

Her kisses were sweeter than wine

She had the chord of my heart go TWANG!

Let me tell you, you are nobody till somebody loves you

She wove my broken dreams and got me hummin’ again

Then BANG came the shipping boom, out of the blue

King Midas on overdrive, I became all over again

My cup of happiness overflowed like never before

Now you are on the other side of goodbye

You are just another faceless person in the crowd

“No parking for you” says the road signs in my heart

Now I can give you anything , but love

I thank god , you could not draw my well of love dry

Our love ghosts tango no longer

Our song has ended , the melody does not linger

My lovely dream weaver owns this heart, I once hung up for you

Please don’t talk about me , now that I am not yours

Troubleshooting Centrifugal Pumps

Because most of the pumps on board ship are centrifugal pumps, we will examine the symptoms and common causes of centrifugal pump problems here.
Centrifugal pumps work, as the name suggests, on the centrifugal forces acting on the liquid being pumped.

The centrifugal force is imparted to the liquid through the high-speed rotation of a specially shaped impeller.
Whenever we find a centrifugal pump not performing well, the causes can usually be traced back to 3 common reasons:
  • Suction related problem
  • System related problem
  • Mechanical related problem
Now you can easily pinpoint the trouble. Download free DiagnoPump, the pump troubleshooter software Here.

Suction Related Problem

The liquid inside the impeller must behave like a solid column in order for the centrifugal pump to work. More liquid must replace whatever liquid forced out by centrifugal force. If the solid column of liquid is broken, by the presence of air, the pumping effect is reduced or broken, and the pump does not perform properly. Some of the common suction related faults are:
  • Pump not primed
  • Pump suction pipe not completely filled with liquid
  • Suction lift too high
  • Insufficient margin between suction pressure and vapor pressure
  • Excessive amount of air or gas in the liquid
  • Air pockets in the suction line
  • Air leaks into the suction line
  • Air leaks into the pump through the stuffing box or gland
  • Foot valve too small
  • Foot valve partially clogged
  • Inlet of suction pipe insufficiently submerged
  • Water seal pipe plugged
  • Seal cage improperly located in stuffing box, preventing sealing fluid entering space to form a seal

System Related Problem

Most of the system related problems occur because of design flaw. For example, the designer may have chosen the wrong pump whose characteristic does not match the system requirement. For the Marine Engineer working on board ship, these problems are rare. Perhaps sometimes, when replacing motors, and starting up. Below are some of the common reasons:
  • Speed too low
  • Speed too high
  • Wrong direction of rotation
  • The total head of system higher than design pump head
  • The total head of system lower than design pump head
  • Specific gravity of liquid different from design
  • Viscosity of liquid differs from that for which the pump was designed
  • Operation at very low capacity
  • Parallel operation of pumps unsuitable for such operation
Mechanical Related Problem

This group of problems is most often encountered on board ship. The effects of mechanical related problems could manifest themselves as suction related problems, like air leaks in the system, worn out impellers, and mouth rings, but the most common occurrence is the presence of vibration and abnormal noise in the equipment.
All equipment on board ship, including centrifugal pumps will encounter mechanical related problems. The practice of good maintenance, and vigilant watchkeeping will lessen the damage to the equipment. Some of the common mechanical related problems are:
  • Foreign matter in the impeller
  • Misalignment
  • Foundations not rigid
  • Shaft bent
  • Rotating part rubbing on stationary part
  • Bearing worn
  • Wearing rings worn
  • Impeller damaged
  • Casing gasket defective, permitting internal leakage
  • Shaft or shaft sleeves worn or scored at the packing
  • Packing improperly installed
  • Incorrect type of packing for operating conditions
  • Shaft running off-center because of worn bearings or misalignment
  • Rotor out of balance, resulting in vibration
  • Gland too tight, resulting in no flow of liquid to lubricate the packing
  • Failure to provide cooling liquid to water-cooled stuffing boxes
  • Excessive clearance at bottom of stuffing box between shaft and casing, causing packing to be forced into pump interior
  • Dirt or grit in sealing liquid, leading to scoring of shaft or shaft sleeve
  • Excessive thrust caused by a mechanical failure inside the pump or by the failure of the hydraulic balancing device, if any.
  • Excessive grease or oil in anti-friction bearing housing or lack of cooling, causing excessive bearing temperature
  • Lack of lubrication
  • Improper installation of anti-friction bearings
  • Dirt getting into bearings
  • Rusting of bearings due to water getting into housing
  • Excessive cooling of water cooled bearing, resulting in condensation of moisture from the atmosphere in the bearing housing

In charge   of the eight to twelve watch.

It's nearly twelve, and the Chief is not down,
   For he left the watch to me;
To drive a ship of eight-thousand tons,
   Over sixty miles of sea.

I hold the reins of ten-thousand horse
   In yonder expansion gear,
And in my reach the expansion link,
   The whip of the engineer.

I feel the pride such power begets,
   Such pride is felt by Gods;
As massive cranks are swinging by
   Reciprocating rods.

A king and I -for in my grip
   Ten-thousant horsepower drives;
I hold the cargo, and the ship,
   And twice one-hundred lives.

The thoughts that riot within my brain
   Are absolutely thrilling.
Until I think that my work per hour
   Is valued at one shilling.

The Engine Room

                           The Engine Room

Here is the poem on Engine Room.....unknown author edited by me......

The sparkling triple expansion,
With its noise and whistling steam
The thumpity thump of the crankshaft,
And the connecting rods all agleam.
The clickity clack of the valve gear,
And the swish of the feed water rams,
The aroma of engine lubricants,
The sound of the oilman's salaams.

The whir from the boiler air fan,

The condenser's different smell,
The leaking steam from loose packing,
The gurgle from the bilge box well.

The sudden blast from the boiler room,

As the junior blows the glass,
The aroma of sweat and brasso,
As the fireman cleans the brass.

The startling ring of the telegraph,

And the action that it brings,
The harmony of disciplined colleagues,
Like music at it swings.

Sunlight streaming through skylights,

Dazzling on polished steel,
Moving around the engine room,
As the quartermaster moves the wheel.

The slowing down of the engines,

And the final telegraph sound,
The quietness of finished with engines,
The joy of homeward bound.

The engineer and the mate

I have posted not to show who is great or not...just for the poem......

Oil soaked shoes all covered with grime;
Polished shoes with a brilliant shine,

Sweated clothes all stained with grease;
Shirt and tie and pants well creased,

Oily scarred and calloused hands
Manicured fingers, looking grand.

Thus they approached the pearly gates,
The Engineer and the Mate.

Saint Peter gazed at this strange sight;
He knew one was wrong, the other was right,

To be sure, he then did look
In his gigantic secret judgment book

Then looking up he said so clear
I'll now pass judgment on the Engineer.

You've sweated blood, you breathed some gas
The scars and bruises and burns still last.

So come my son and take your place
Like a king, in all his grace.

My son you've stood it very well -
You've surely had your share of hell.

The Engineer passed through the gates;
Saint Peter then turned unto the Mate.

You've filled your lungs with cool clean air;
You've known the breezes and the sun up there,

Pushing a pencil, you've traveled in class;
You've been a passenger before the mast.

There isn't a question, yes or no -
Now it's your turn to go below!!

A POEM ON "Firing a Boiler".

Hi friends here is the poem which governs the starting of boiler.....i have put up this only to say that there is an  innovative way of learning the engineering.....

Set the burners open wide

Do not touch the valves at the side

Keep the pressure on the pump

And up the tank steam will jump

If the smoke is black and thick

Open up the fans a bit

If the smoke is thick and white

To slow the fans will be quite right

For when sufficient air is given

No smoke given up to heaven

If the jets refuse to squirt

Assume the cause is due to dirt

Should the flame be short and white

You have combustion clear and bright

But should the flame be yellow and long

Combustion is entirely wrong

To have it more is not quite wise

Because the oil may carbonize

A little lower has been found

To give good results all round

If the filters are not  kept clean

No rise of pressure will be seen

If these instructions you will follow

You'll beat the other fellow hollow.....................!!!!!

Everybody knew the proverb:

“Wise men learn by other's faults, fools by their own” and “Experience is the teacher of fools”.

 It is right, isn’t it?

Why do not uses the negative experience of the others engineers to learn safety lessons from that?
